Jeff Weltman: Continuity only matters when you are winning
The Orlando Magic again are running back much of the same roster. Their betting on continuity is a sign of their success and a luxury for them for now.
The Orlando Magic entered the offseason with a lot of flexibility and a lot of opportunity. The team had more cap room than almost any team would know what to do with.
The Magic exited their summer with very little new on the roster. They celebrated the addition of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as someone who could bring some championship experience, perimeter defense and 3-point shooting to a team that is always in need of all three.
The rest of the offseason though was about maintaining the culture and maintaining the roster. Orlando is adding only two players to the roster -- Caldwell-Pope and rookie Tristan Da Silva. This a year after they added only three players -- free agent Joe Ingles and two rookies in Anthony Black and Jett Howard.
The Magic had a successful season in 2023, bouncing back from a 5-20 start to go 34-48 and nearly make a run for the last Play-In spot. They brought virtually the same group back in 2024 to go 47-35 and reach the Playoffs as the 5-seed.
Orlando had success with this group. They do not seem eager to roll the dice on dramatic changes.
