How Tyus Jones gets his assists

For as long as Tyus Jones has been on the radar for the Orlando Magic -- at least a two-season odyssey -- there has been one stat that has carried the day.

Well, his shooting has been a good point in Jones' favor. He has been an efficient 3-point shooter throughout his career -- 41.4 percent the last two seasons and 37.8 percent for his career.

But the biggest stat that has worked in Jones' favor has been his passing efficiency. He is not merely a high-assist player, but a no-mistake player. Jones has had one of the best assist-to-turnover ratios in the league throughout his career.

Last year with the Phoenix Suns, Jones averaged 5.3 assists per game against 1.1 turnovers per game. It was just the second season in Jones' career where he averaged more than a turnover per game.

In 2024 with the Washington Wizards, Jones averaged 7.3 assists per game against 1.0 turnover per game. He has a career 4.4 to 0.8 assist-to-turnovers per game ratio.

Jones is likely going to settle around 4-5 assists per game against one turnover per game when he takes the floor for the Magic. They are likely to use him in a bench role when they are healthy, with perhaps spot starts if either of their guards must miss any time.

The Magic are hoping that Jones can do for them what Cory Joseph did for them late in the season, providing stability and organization when the team gets chaotic. If the Magic are trying to "Moneyball" their point guard position, Jones is a safety valve, giving them the stability that a traditional point guard might provide.
