Desmond Bane was the Orlando Magic's first choice all along
The Orlando Magic have often been frustratingly hesitant to push their chips into the table to improve their roster. Desmond Bane was the one they pursued.
Get any group of people into a room, and there are bound to be disagreements. They may be benign, and they do not always lead to tables flipping over, but it is hard to align everyone on the same thing.
Especially when it is a group of people trying to solve a complex problem of predicting the future and figuring out what a team needs. Even if there is alignment on overall philosophy, there is always some tweak or reason to be knocked off kilter.
That player is too small. That player is not good enough on defense. That one cannot shoot well enough. They do not fit exactly.
As president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman gathered his group to begin discussing options for the offseason, Desmond Bane was always a player the team discussed to some degree. But they did not think he would become available.
Weltman made his calls around the league and quickly discovered that Bane would be available. From there, the Magic moved quickly.
There was no debate. There was no argument. There was no doubt. This was the player the Magic wanted.
